SERVICES

Individual Therapy

Toward a more authentic and connected life.

We take a warm, direct, client-centered approach to individual therapy with adolescents and adults. We work from a social justice-oriented treatment perspective that emphasizes the power of a safe, affirming therapy relationship as a place to begin healing and brave change.

We specialize in working with the following issues:

  • gender and sexual identity;
  • sex and intimacy;
  • physical, emotional, and sexual trauma;
  • anxiety;
  • depression; and
  • the impacts of harmful parenting.

Our clinical approach is informed by relational, narrative, intersubjective, and psychodynamic lenses.

Providing a safe space to explore, express, and embody your authentic gender identity.

Many of our clients are people who identify as transgender, non-binary, or gender-nonconforming. We work from a gender-affirming perspective: we believe each client is the true expert on their own gender. We work with clients to help them to identify and understand their gender identity, and to get the support they need to live authentically. We work with pre-teens (12+) and adolescents, and individual adults.

We provide consultations for families of children ages 3-11 with gender-related concerns. We enjoy supporting parents and caregivers in their process of understanding and affirming their gender-diverse children.

Our providers have received hundreds of hours of post-graduate supervision and training in the care of transgender people. We practice under the standards of care of the World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH).

In addition to psychotherapy, we also perform free surgical readiness assessments and write letters of support for people pursuing gender-affirming medical care. All of our therapists are trained to utilize the Gender Affirmative  Supportive Surgery Evaluation Tool, which we use to guide our assessment process. Each of us has signed the GALAP pledge. We are committed to reducing barriers to medical and mental health care for T/GNC/NB people.

Sex-positive, affirming treatment of sex and intimacy concerns.

Unfortunately, most therapists receive absolutely no graduate training on addressing sex and intimacy-related issues. This often leaves clients feeling uncomfortable even addressing sex and intimacy with their therapists.

Clinicians at the Maryland Center for Gender & Intimacy have sought specialized post-graduate training to help our clients address sex and intimacy concerns in a safe, nonjudgmental space. We embrace many of the philosophies of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists and its affirmative, non-pathologizing approach to sex therapy. Our work is influenced by multiple approaches, including the PLSSIT Model of sex therapy.

The sex-related concerns we can work with in therapy include, but are not limited to:

  • desire;
  • sexual shame;
  • arousal and/or orgasm;
  • self-pleasure/masturbation;
  • body image;
  • compulsive sexual behavior; and
  • sexual trauma.

We are kink-friendly, polyamory-friendly, and sex-worker-friendly.
