Justine Kilian, LMSW

Psychotherapist
pronouns: she/they

Justine holds a BA in Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies and Social Thought & Political Economy from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a Masters in Social Work from the Smith College School for Social Work. She is a Licensed Masters Social Worker under the supervision of Kate MacShane, LCSW-C.

Justine is licensed in Maryland and Pennsylavania, and can provide telehealth sessions for clients physically located in those states. She sees clients in person in our Frederick office.

Justine is a white therapist who proudly carries the queer & trans legacies of compassion, wit, and perseverance in her clinical work. She is humbled to stand alongside teenagers, adults, and partnerships as they determine and deepen the directions of life change. As a non-binary transgender woman, she welcomes clients of all identities in her work, including queer, trans, non-monogamous, kinky, and neurodivergent folks.

Justine views therapy as an exploratory space for discerning and developing life change. By bringing enthusiasm and joy to each unique relationship, she strives to create gentle, supportive structure for people navigating trauma. She draws upon psychodynamic, humanist, multicultural, transfeminist, post-structuralist, and Adaptive Information Processing foundations to aid clients as they author their own lives. She strongly believes in the magic of relational psychotherapy and believes everyone is capable of healing and growth. Justine has completed EMDR Basic Training with Deany Laliotis at the Center for Excellence in EMDR Therapy. She currently pursues certification with the EMDR International Association and is happy to offer this intervention to clients.

Justine has previous experience working in special education settings, leading LGBTQ+ affirming care initiatives, and crisis intervention. Her approach is informed by her time as a community educator and organizer for gender-affirming policy in institutions of higher education. She has previous tenure in performing arts, creative and scholarly writing, and culinary arts, all of which she continues to grow and develop throughout her own journey as a therapist and a person.
