Merrick McKelvie, LMSW

Psychotherapist
pronouns: they/he

Merrick holds a BA in Anthropology from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, an MA in Women’s and Gender Studies from the University of South Florida, and an MSW from the University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Social Work. Merrick is a Licensed Masters Social Worker under the clinical supervision of Kate MacShane, LCSW-C.

Merrick is licensed in Maryland and able to offer telehealth sessions for clients physically located in the state of Maryland.  They see clients in person in our Frederick office.

Merrick is a white, transgender, queer, and neurodivergent psychotherapist and social worker. Their clinical practice centers on relationship-building and is rooted in an anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and liberatory social work perspective. Merrick aims to collectively build bridges with their clients toward a more just world through radical growth, self-compassion, and self-attunement. His goal as a clinician is to invite clients to explore all parts of themselves and to walk alongside clients in the meaning-making process.

Merrick encourages existential questions, systems critique, spiritual exploration, and all parts of the you that come into his office. They are passionate about providing support to neurodivergent folks (particularly Autistic folks and people with ADHD), queer, transgender, and non-binary folks, and people who have experienced complex trauma. Merrick is particularly interested in supporting people in re-discovering their authenticity.

Merrick uses their training in women’s and gender studies and cultural anthropology, as well as their previous work in supporting folks with developmental and intellectual disabilities to be curious about the ways social identities impact relationships, to attune to clients’ individual needs, and to co-create intentional space with clients to grapple with the ways in which systems of oppression can (and do) impact psychological distress.

Merrick has an eclectic therapeutic approach and draws from existential therapy, feminist therapy, emotion-focused therapy, and psychodynamic relational psychotherapy to help support their clients. Merrick has completed training in kink and poly-affirming therapy and has completed training in EMDR with The Center for Excellence in EMDR Therapy.
